Kus-Kus: A Cultural Brand

Before the communist occupation of the Czech Republic, the country had a thriving national design and porcelain industry. Products were exported around the world creating a global presence for the Czech Republic.

Between 1948 and 1989, the Czech Republic was incorporated as part of the Soviet Union. During this period of communist occupation, the thriving design and porcelain industries were destroyed and forgotten. The velvet revolution of 1989 marked the rebirth of an independent Czech Republic. Since 1989, the Czech people have been trying to regain a global presence with innovative design and crafts for global export.

While studying in the Czech Republic during the summer of 2007, my assignment was to design a traditional Czech brand with a team of three other students.

Kus-Kus, which translates into Piece-Piece in English, is an attempt to create a uniquely Czech brand using traditional Czech crafts. The goal of this brand is to create new and innovative products for domestic and international sales. Kus-Kus is a housewares brand founded on the strong porcelain heritage of the Czech Republic, and promises to design products that are modular, interchangeable, modern, simple, elegant, and nationalistic, for commercial and residential use.
